Those are pretty much free standing arcs in their own right, although *Scars* definitely benefits from having read *A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns*. There's another great arc in *Scars and Path of Heaven.* These books bring the White Scars arc from the start of the Heresy up to just before the Siege. The first is *The First Heretic, Know No Fear, Betrayer.* It's basically the Word Bearers arc up to a certain point, covering their fall to Chaos, attack on Calth and the Shadow Crusade although Betrayer also focuses heavily on Angron, Khârn and the World Eaters. I ignored the two Ultramarine-Word Bearer novels that came as tie ins to *Betrayal at Calth* (are they considered part of the series?) and I ignored *Furious Abyss*\- I feel I've missed little important there based on the plot summaries I've read.īeyond the first five books I'd mention two arcs. I'll just say I wish I didn't read *Old Earth.* It was a bit of a slog. I've basically ignored all of Nick Kymes Salamanders novels because I don't much like what I've read of his writing, but I read *Old Earth* because I thought it might be necessary for adding context to future events in the Siege of Terra. Even so, a brief google will probably clue you in about them when we get to those final books. I was going to say *The Outcast Dead* can be skipped but it looks like a few characters from it might continue to pop up later during the Siege. *Tallarn* can probably be skipped without missing out on too much. But a lot of them are actually very good and worth reading. Most of the short stories in the compilations add depth to the overall story arc and fill in a few minor gaps, but nothing you can't catch up on yourself, with one exception that would unfortunately be too much of a spoiler to disclose. Skip *Nemesis.* I didn't think it was very good, and it is pretty much irrelevant to the wider plot. naff):**Įdit bollocks someone already listed a separate guide. **Pass (compilation/short story based and/or filler books or just kinda. **Can/maybe should read (not that amazing and/or add to the series in a meaningful way):** **Must Read (because either story and/or awesome):**ġ (book number in the series) - Horus RisingĢ3 - Angel Exterminatus (you could skip this but don't, its a super good read and you will come out of it actually admiring perty)Ĥ2 - Garro (not too important to the story but its Garro, must read just for him tbh, by the time you finish Flight of the Eisenstein you will love him)Ĥ4 - The Crimson King (book was kinda meh personally but you need to read it to connect the dots for the Thousand Sons and how they turned traitor) Books to read Bear in mind this is my personal opinion, people may disagree about certain books and how much they like/dislike and how important they are for them and the story but for the most part i feel this list is legit and hope it helps, i would also read them in order of the book number.
